Dover Castle

Last weekend we spent Saturday visiting the castle at Dover. Its roots are Roman, Saxon and early Norman but its history is more varied as it was also instrumental in WWII. On a tour of the tunnel system built into the hill beneath the castle a guide advised that the reason the castle never took any damage during WWII was because Hitler wanted to use it and its tunnel system when he invaded Britain. It's probably for the best he never got the opportunity.

The next couple of photos are from the main castle. The first one is the water well from inside the kitchen and the second is of the castle from inside the inner wall.

There was all sorts of tunnels underneath the castle besides those built for modern military purposes. The photo below is from tunnels built in medieval times.

This was one of the rooms they showed us on the Operation Dynamo tour which recounted the evacuation in 1940 of Allied troops from the beaches at Dunkirk, France back to England. It reminds me of the set from the film, The Imitation Game.
